Thank you for applying for the  2019 NEH Colonial Experiences and Their Legacies in Southeast Asia, hosted by the Asian Studies Development Program at East-West Center.

Colonial Experiences and Their Legacies in Southeast Asia will explore the multiple ways in which Southeast Asian societies responded to colonial presences and how the long shadow of these experiences shaped subsequent efforts to forge national identities, envision independent political futures, and imagine new relationships between the state and its citizens.  The four-week program is designed to meet the teaching needs of educators in community and undergraduate-serving colleges and universities in the United States. Its context-rich engagement with the region will enable participants to develop curricular materials for a range of humanities courses and to engage themes of contemporary relevance such as globalization and cultural pluralism.
